Breaking news : The surprising candidate for the Manchester United job
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired by
Manchester United on Sunday and as
the search begins to find his successor,
Lopetegui has emerged as a candidates
to take charge at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard coached Porto, Spain and
Real Madrid before he was appointed by
Sevilla in 2019. In his first season at the
Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, Lopetegui
led the Andalusian team all the way to
Europa League glory after beating Inter
3-2 in the final.
According to the Athletic and the journalist
Duncan Castles, Lopetegui's name is
on Manchester United's shortlist as a
potential replacement for Solskjaer.
The Red Devils are set to appoints Michael
Carrick as interim boss until the end of the
season, but they are not ruling out the possibility
of hiring a new coach soon.
Meanwhile, Laurent Blanc, Erik ten Hag
and Zinedine Zidane are some other names
that have emerged as potential suitors for
the job.
Tottenham wanted Lopetegui
Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur seemed
willing to trigger Lopetegui's release clause,
which is set at more than 4.5 million euros,
as they looked to lure him to the Premier
League, but the Spanish coach turned down
their offer due to "family reasons".
"Tottenham? I am where I want to be,"
Lopetegui told Radio MARCA back in June.
"We have been able to have options
[to leave]. Obviously we are very happy,
with our heads focused on making Sevilla
grow and make Sevilla competitive again.
We are focused on it, we are not looking
elsewhere."
